About
Confined Spaces
A confined space is defined as
an area that is large enough for an employee to enter and perform work, but has limited or restricted means of entry/exit
and is not designed for continuous human occupancy. Examples include tanks, ship and barge hulls, heavy industry/processing
facilities, utility and communications installations and construction sites/trenches.
Hazards of Confined Space Rescue
Confined spaces are often narrow and
constricting, preventing easy access by rescuers. They are usually either unlit or poorly lit so rescuers must provide their
own light source. Finally, confined spaces often contain hazardous materials (liquid or gas) which can be harmful or fatal to humans. Atmospheric hazards (ie. oxygen deficiency, flammable/toxic gases
or vapors) are responsible for more than half of all confined space fatalities.
The
urgent need to rescue someone from a confined space often leads to ill-prepared rescue attempts. Confined space rescues can
be extremely challenging and must be carefully planned and executed to prevent further injury and to avoid creating more victims
in need of rescue. Two-thirds of all of deaths occurring in confined spaces are attributed to persons attempting to rescue
someone else. Whether the result of human error, natural disaster or acts
of terrorism, confined space emergencies can be devastating – not only to rescue personnel, but also to co-workers
who make valiant, but often futile, efforts to bring victims to safety.
